[content] => Most people have seen the wild memes about Brigham Young University - otherwise known as the school where students would rather drink a cup of boiling oil than a cold brew. The videos are wildly entertaining to watch, but there's a lot more to the story there at the university. It's a complicated conservative institution with a varied past, and has been historically highly oppressive to the LGBTQ+ community. As a result, the school made international news when a group of students lit up the school's iconic "Y Mountain" in rainbow colors in early 2020.
But, A Long Way From Heaven does a lot more than tell the story of the Rainbow Y. It outlines the history of queer treatment at BYU - the good (where it exists), the bad, and the very, very ugly. The film combines new, original footage with a huge variety of historical images, videos, newspaper articles, and other mixed media from every conceivable source to tell the story of BYU's queer students, and the bravery and risks they constantly take to make their voices heard.

[post_content] => Dr. Lacey Bagley, LMFT (she/her) is originally from northern Minnesota and now lives in Provo, UT, which is the ancestral home of the Shoshone, Paiute, Goshute, and Ute Tribes. She is a queer psychotherapist and supervisor for queer therapists-in-training. She is also an educator, speaker, and fierce advocate for the queer community. She is a White, cisgender, bisexual/queer, mostly-able-bodied, married woman and mother, a citizen of the US and a native English speaker. She was raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she remained active until her excommunication in the spring of 2023.

David Grew up in Southeastern Idaho in a strong Mormon family. David was very active in Scouting and the church. He served a mission on the Navajo Indian Reservation. He graduated from Ricks College and BYU. David was married for 28 years and has a wonderful daughter, son and daughter-in-law, and will become a grandpa later this year. David has spent his career working in positive youth development programs. He has served in the Fathers in Affirmation Leadership for many years. He also serves on a couple of State and National 4-H Access, Equity and Belonging committees and enjoys teaching youth and adults. David married his husband Ken in 2023 after being together for four years. They enjoy traveling and exploring the world around them and making new friends.
